For better or worse, we are heading into the heart of the political season as the primaries for political parties heat up. No matter which side of the political spectrum you might find yourself on, if you step back and think about it, all sides really want the same thing – a stronger nation. Of course, just because politicians have the same major goal in mind, doesn’t mean they have the same ideas on how to get to that point.

Much like solutions to societal issues, there are different bunionette (or tailor’s bunion) treatment options that exist. It is important to note that conservative care (no affiliation with political ideology) can provide relief for symptoms and prevent bunionettes from worsening, but it will not actually improve the deformity itself. A bunionette, or bunion, is a progressive medical issue and can only be completely resolved with the use of surgical procedures.

That said, nonsurgical treatment methods are often quite effective for addressing the symptoms of bunionettes, including pain, inflammation, swelling, and corns and calluses. These conservative methods include:

  • Shoe modifications. Shoes that feature wide, deep toe boxes provide greater comfort for the condition. Models that have high heels and pointed toes should be avoided.
  • Padding. A pad placed over the affected area can reduce irritation and discomfort.
  • Icing. Ice therapy is an effective way to reduce levels of pain and inflammation.
  • Oral medication. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can also help with pain and inflammation.
  • Orthotic devices. Custom orthotics can help the condition by redistributing pressure that would otherwise fall on the affected area.

As with bunion surgery, surgical procedures to correct a bunionette can be used to realign bones, repair ligaments and tendons, or remove the protruding bump. If this is the treatment you wish to pursue, we can look at your specific situation and then discuss the details so you know exactly what to expect.
