There is nothing like a nagging pain in your foot to put a damper on your spring plans. Bunion pain can really interfere with where you go and what you do. There is a great event happening in Oyster Bay, NY, April 26-27, 2014, called the Arbor Day Family Festival. It includes live music, a petting zoo, plant clinics, tree plantings and more—all a part of the Planting Fields Foundation. It is a great, family-friendly event, but bunion pain should not be invited to come along.

A bunion is a common foot deformity that affects the big toe joint. The big toe tends to lean inward toward the smaller toes and thus pushes the joint outward, giving the characteristic bump on the side of the foot. They tend to develop due to an inherited foot structure, but poor foot care and improper footwear can both play a role in causing them to worsen more quickly. If you know you are predisposed to this foot problem, or already have bunions forming, being proactive with your foot health will be very helpful in stopping associated pain and problems that can come along.

If you are going to be walking around all day, such as at the Arbor Day Family Festival, make a smart choice in your footwear. Wear a roomy, supportive, comfortable shoe that will protect your foot and keep it supported and stabilized while standing and walking. Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes would obviously be styles to avoid. Bunion pads or moleskin on pressure areas can prevent rubbing, and we have many patients who find great relief by wearing a pair of custom orthotic inserts in their shoes.

We want you to enjoy everything life has to offer, even the small moments. Don’t let bunions become a big problem—contact Mark Gasparini, D.P.M. for preventative tips or treatment for present bunion pain. Call our Massapequa, NY office today at (516) 804-9038 or request an appointment online
