Here on Long Island, we have no shortage of gorgeous beaches to explore and enjoy.  Now, our podiatrists—Dr. Mark Gasparini and Dr. Novneet Chhabra—believe that a beach day should leave you feeling relaxed, not sunburned, dehydrated, or limping across a parking lot because the sand tried to cook your feet. Packing the right items can help protect your skin, reduce foot pain, manage swelling, and make the entire day more comfortable. So, with those goals in mine, we present our podiatrist-approved beach day packing list.  A woman putting sunscreen into her beach bag

Beach Day Packing List

Our podiatrists have crafted this packing list to help prevent foot pain, swelling or burns at the end of your day at the beach. We encourage you to follow our tips, and contact our office if you have questions or concerns about your foot health this summer.

Choose Sandals That Protect Your Feet

Basic flip-flops may be easy to pack, but they often provide little arch support, cushioning, or protection from hot sand. For a longer beach day, consider bringing footwear that’s designed for comfort and stability. Below are some options to consider.

  1. Supportive Walking Sandals

Supportive sandals are a good choice when you will be walking along the boardwalk, carrying bags, or exploring areas near the beach. Look for:

  • Cushioned footbeds
  • Built-in arch support
  • Adjustable straps
  • Firm soles
  • Secure heel straps

These features can reduce pressure on the heels and arches and may help prevent foot fatigue.

  1. Water Shoes or Sandals

Water sandals are designed to handle wet conditions while staying securely attached to your feet. They are especially useful on rocky beaches, near shells, or when walking through shallow water.

Choose a pair with:

  • Quick-drying material
  • Slip-resistant soles
  • Toe protection
  • Drainage openings
  • Adjustable straps
  1. Platform or Thick-Soled Sandals

Sand can become extremely hot during the middle of the day. Sandals with thick soles create more distance between your feet and the ground, helping protect them from heat.

Avoid extremely thin flip-flops, which may allow heat from the sand or pavement to reach your feet quickly.

  1. Closed-Toe Beach Shoes

Closed-toe water shoes offer the most protection from hot sand, sharp shells, rocks, and debris. They can be especially helpful for children, people with sensitive feet, or anyone visiting an unfamiliar beach.

Bring a second pair of dry shoes or sandals for the trip home. Wearing wet footwear for hours can cause rubbing, blisters, and skin irritation.

Beach Day Packing List: Don’t Forget Skin Cancer Protection

Sun protection is important even on cloudy days—and don’t forget that the delicate skin on your feet needs to be cared for, too. To stay safe, pack:

  1. Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 30. Broad-spectrum products protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Apply sunscreen generously before sun exposure and reapply:

  • At least every two hours
  • After swimming
  • After heavy sweating
  • After drying off with a towel

Do not forget commonly missed areas such as the ears, tops of the feet, back of the neck, scalp, lips, and around swimsuit straps.

  1. SPF Lip Balm

The lips can also be damaged by ultraviolet radiation. Bring a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher and reapply it throughout the day.

  1. Protective Clothing

A long-sleeved swim shirt or rash guard can provide more reliable protection than sunscreen alone, especially during extended periods in the water.

Other helpful items include:

  • A wide-brimmed hat
  • UV-blocking sunglasses
  • Lightweight long-sleeved clothing
  • A beach umbrella or sun shelter

Try to spend part of the day in the shade, particularly during the strongest midday sunlight.

Items That Help Prevent Foot and Ankle Swelling

Heat, long periods of sitting, dehydration, and standing for hours can contribute to foot and ankle swelling at the end of the day. A few simple items and habits may help reduce discomfort.

  1. Plenty of Water

Bring more water than you think you will need. Dehydration can affect circulation and may make heat-related discomfort worse.

An insulated bottle or cooler can help keep water cold throughout the day. Also consider packing frozen water bottles to enjoy easy, refreshing hydration all throughout the day.

  1. A Folding Chair or Footrest

Sitting directly on a towel may leave your legs in an uncomfortable position. A supportive beach chair can make it easier to change positions and occasionally elevate your feet, helping prevent swelling at the end of the day.

A small cooler or folded towel may also work as a temporary footrest.

  1. Supportive Shoes for the Journey Home

After several hours in the heat, feet may feel tired or swollen. Adjustable sandals or supportive sneakers can be more comfortable than narrow or rigid shoes, and can be a great choice if you have a long journey from the shore to the parking lot.

You can also help reduce swelling by:

  • Taking short walks instead of sitting still for hours
  • Moving your ankles and toes regularly
  • Avoiding footwear with tight straps
  • Elevating your feet during breaks
  • Limiting very salty snacks
  • Taking breaks in a cooler, shaded area

Other Beach-Day Essentials

A well-packed beach bag should also include:

  • Towels
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A cooler with snacks
  • A waterproof phone case
  • A portable charger
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Insect repellent
  • A basic first-aid kit
  • Bandages for blisters
  • A wet-clothing bag
  • Extra clothing
  • Identification and emergency contact information

Post Beach Day Recovery

The best beach-day packing list does more than include a towel and sunscreen. Supportive sandals can protect your feet from hot sand and reduce pain, sun-protection items can lower your exposure to harmful ultraviolet radiation, and hydration, movement, and comfortable footwear may help reduce swelling.
