There might not be an actual magic pill for physical health, but exercise comes pretty close to fitting the bill. It prevents, cures, and even reverses a wide range of physical and mental health issues. As we enter the New Year, you are likely considering making resolutions that will lead to healthy living, and exercise is likely a central component.

We want you to be successful in your health goals. Whether this means losing weight or building muscle or taking up a healthy hobby like running, the following tips can help you keep your resolutions:

  • As you start thinking about a healthier lifestyle, figure out what this specifically means for you. Ask yourself what you ultimately hope to achieve. This will help you make resolutions that are specific, which is extremely important. A vague goal like “I want to get in better shape” is simply not as effective as “I am going to lose 25 pounds this year.”

  • In addition to being specific, make sure that your goal is attainable. An unrealistic target will only demoralize you and increase the odds that you give up on healthy living initiatives.

  • Break your specific, attainable goal into steps. When you train to run a marathon, you do not start with running 26.2 miles on Day One. Instead, you start with a couple miles and build up from there.

  • Write your goal down and post it in places where you will see it and be reminded of what you are trying to achieve. Studies consistently show that those who write their goals down are more apt to reach them than those who don’t. This is a valuable technique for giving you focus and reminding you of what you are trying to accomplish.

You might not think to include this in your New Year resolutions, but make sure you give some thought to what you need for healthy feet, too. By keeping vigilant against toenail fungus, ingrown nails, and cracked, dry skin that leads to fissures, you will ensure that your feet will do their part in helping with your overall health.
