Sesamoids are bones that are connected to tendons only and are embedded in muscle. There are very few of them, but one is found under your big toe. Like any other bone in the body, it can fracture and become inflamed. When this happens it’s called sesamoiditis, and it is most prevalent in ballet dancers, baseball catchers, and runners.

There are some common symptoms of sesamoiditis that you can look for to tell if you have it or not. First, you will experience ball of foot pain, focused just below your big toe. The pain may develop over time, or with a fracture immediately. Second, you might notice bruising and swelling. Finally, bending and straightening your big toe will be painful.
