The Breathe for Britt 5k will be held on June 7 in Nesconset, NY, with proceeds supporting families affected by cystic fibrosis. The Breathe for Britt foundation was established in memory of a brave 14-year old who passed away in 2008 from this condition and serves to ensure that her incredible spirit lives on. It is important to us that foot and ankle issues—like ones that happen with supination—do not hold you back from participating in worthwhile community events like this.

We are proud to help our fellow Long Islanders overcome foot and ankle pain so they can go out and make a difference in our community. One of the ways we do so is by treating issues that accompany pronation abnormalities.

Pronation is a natural rolling motion that begins with the strike of your heel on the ground and continues through the final push of your toes every time you walk or run. When this is performed in a neutral manner, there are usually no associated problems. If the roll is inadequate—supination, as often happens with high arches—it causes various issues.

When you underpronate like this, the outside edge of the foot absorbs a greater amount of force than it is intended to face. This situation results in various problems, including:

  • Stress fractures – Tiny cracks in bone tissue that can be quite painful, especially with physical activity.
  • Shin splints – Sharp pain, soreness, or tenderness in the front, inner part of the lower leg.
  • Ankle sprains – Ligaments in the ankle that overstretch due to lateral instability cause pain and stiffness in the joint.
  • Plantar fasciitis – An overworked plantar fascia can cause painful inflammation and swelling.

Treatment is often conservative in nature, and you may benefit from a pair of custom orthotics to correct the condition. Our office can prepare ones fabricated to the specifications of your unique feet.

Foot Specialists of Long Island wants you to understand the issues that come with supination. By doing so, you can get the treatment you need to make a difference in the community. 5k run/walks are a great way to support a worthy cause, but foot or ankle issues steal that option from you. Take it back by making your appointment with our Massapequa, NY office today. Schedule one online or give us a call at (516) 804-9038 and let us know how we can help you.
