There are many rules we may follow without knowing whether they are truth or not. Should we always wait 30 minutes after eating before going swimming? Does eating spicy food cause ulcers? If you cross your eyes, will they stay that way? Does the five-second rule always count when you drop your food on the floor?

We’ll let you sort out the answers to those questions! What we want to highlight are some myths and facts about bunions. The truth is that bunions are a very common foot deformity, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, but there are a few things about them that are often misunderstood. One myth is that they develop from wearing pointed-toe high-heels. The truth is that bunions develop due to genetic predisposition. Wearing shoes like this, however, can cause them to progress and worsen quicker. Another myth related to the first one is that only women are at risk for this foot problem. While they are more common in women, men and women of all ages can develop them.

We have seen many patients over the years who have suffered with bunion pain because they believed nothing could be done. If this is currently your situation, we are excited to tell you there is help! While it may not be “cured” there are several treatment options that can relieve your pain and stop the bunion from getting worse. These may include splints, physical therapy, and custom orthotics. For severe cases, surgery is often very successful in removing the bunion and associated discomfort.
